His talent was not forgiven...

PERSONALITY. Nowadays Volodymyr Ivasiuk’s name, as of a great composer, founder of Ukrainian pop music, is known to many people around the globe. But it wasn’t always so easy to express one’s admiration for his bottomless talent, to pay honour to this true titan of Ukrainian music. Only in 1995 with the foundation of Chernivtsi V.Ivasiuk Memorial Museum the comprehensive information about his life and creative work became available to the general public.

This year we are going to celebrate his 65th birth anniversary. On the eve of these events BSMU students, namely group 42/1st year students (tutor – Makovska O.O.) and group 7/2nd year students (tutor – Vakhotskyi M.M.) paid a visit to this museum.

Hryniova Viktoria, gr. 7/2nd year student: “We were able to touch the eternal, glorious, invincible, just what the artist lived by, we could see everything that surrounded him in his everyday life. It was V.Ivasiuk who took and led Ukrainian music out of the shadows, Ukrainian song sounded from the stage and at that very moment the whole world started to sing it. His songs “Red Rue” and “Vodohrai” “The Fountain” were recognized as the best songs of the year in USSR in 1971 and 1972 respectively. They proved that Ukrainian music was not just a kind of primitive, marginalized, and doomed to extinction melody, it had never been such and never will”.

The excursion was especially interesting for foreign students, since they know quite little about the history of Ukrainian culture.

Master Vidhi, gr. 42/1st year student: “I am impressed by the amount of work that the author succeeded to perform for such an unfairly short life. No wonder it was compared with the life of a butterfly – the same brief and bright. It's amazing that even the letters from the entire USSR reached their destination without the exact address, simply indicating “to the “Red Rue” author”. V.Ivasiuk is a legend, symbol, namecard of Ukraine, pride of the entire nation, personality of whom we are now also aware. He is an ideal for everyone, because V.Ivasiuk was a BSMU student, and it means that we sometimes study in the same classrooms, at the same desks”.

Since that time in Ukraine no song has been created – so popular, so magnificent, beloved by people of all ages, as the “Red Rue” is. V.Ivasiuk is a multi-dimensional figure, a symbol of a generation, which was not allowed to have the right to self-expression.

Our basic task and duty is to support and promote, popularize among the younger generation Ivasiuk’s works, to fortify their national identity and, of course to keep the fire of memory burning.

CHARITY EVENT. Traditionally, on the occasion of St. Nicholas Day, students of Bukovinian State Medical University hold numerous charity events in order to give joy, warmth and smile to those deprived of it.

This year was not an exception either. On December, 19 the students, led by their teachers Khrystyna Chympoi and Yana Teleki, instructors of Internal Medicine Department with the assistance of the staff of the Department of Internal Medicine visited the orphanage for disabled children in the village Zaluchia-Dolishnie, Sniatyn District, Ivano-Frankivsk Region.

The children met the students cheerfully, with sincere smiles recognizing almost everyone, since it wasn’t their first visit to the orphanage.

All the collected money was spent for buying personal hygiene items, food, stationery and delicious gifts for everyone.

These were not only the gifts that made the children sincerely happy, but also because of the attention paid to them; the fact that the students remember about them, visit them every year is quite important for the orphans. Each student became a kind of St. Nicholas for these children. Atmosphere of kindness and a sincere desire to help and to make a real holiday for the children reigned everywhere.

CHARITY EVENTS. The tradition of receiving gifts from St. Nicholas originated from Medieval Germany, where on the eve of the holiday parents gave the children new winter clothes. Eventually they started to do this secretly at night, so the children could believe in the miracles. Sweets, nuts, toys were also presented later. They were usually hidden in new or polished and repaired old shoes, placed near fireplaces, or in the stockings hung on the fireplace. Children believe that St. Nicholas throws the gifts into the houses through the chimneys.

Disobedient children get a bunch of rods. It was believed that the names of those deserving or not deserving the gift are recorded in Nicholas’s Golden Book. With the lapse of time, the children began to write letters to the saint, in which they numbered their good deeds, asked for forgiveness for bad ones and wrote what present they wanted to get.

There is the category of children who strongly believe in this holiday since they have none to expect presents from. They happened to face the life alone without parents’ care. Therefore, three years running, the staff of Histology, Cytology and Embryology Department of Bukovinian State Medical University, led by Professor Taras Boychuk give presents to inmates of specialized boarding school in Mahala village.

It became a tradition, that the teachers of the departments together with the students of their groups come to the children with presents. And it’s always pleasant to see the joy on the children’s faces when they welcome guests. Each child is trying to talk to medical students, to speak about their achievements. It should be noted that this year the assistant professor of Department of Bioorganic and Biological Chemistry and Clinical Biochemistry Irina Yaremii with her students joined the staff of the Department of Histology, Cytology and Embryology. Students of the 41 group, medical faculty № 3 were not indifferent as well and gladly joined the charity campaign. All gave pieces of their hearts to the inmates of the boarding school, and received words of thanks and warm smiles in return…

ACADEMIC MOBILITY. On November 27-30, 2013 Vice-Rector for Research and International Relations, Professor Oleksandr Ivashchuk made an official visit to the city of Riga (Latvia) in the framework of Bukovinian State Medical University participation in the Erasmus Mundus grant program.

During the working meeting, which was attended by the representatives of all the consortium “MEDEA” partner universities, a formal agreement on cooperation in the framework of Erasmus Mundus (Action 2) was signed and the issues of academic mobility of students and young scientists between partner universities were fixed up.

“Erasmus Mundus” – EU educational program aimed at fostering international cooperation, increasing mobility among students, teachers and scholars of European universities and universities of third countries on all continents.

Professor O. Ivashchuk performed a presentation of higher medical education inUkrainein general and in BSMU in particular. In addition, at a working meeting of program coordinators the official web-site of the project was introduced; the web-site plays an important role in the popularization of its objectives and results, and it will become a source of information about the program and conditions of participation in it.

We have to note that the joining of BSMU to the European academic mobility program is a new stage of the University international cooperation, which, in its turn, has confirmed the recognition of BSMU in the European educational space.

It should also be emphasized that the mobility of students and teachers is one of the basic principles of modern European education. Education, training and research work abroad enriches the individual human experience, gives the opportunity to learn more about other models of knowledge gaining and spreading, makes it possible to expand the network of contacts and communication, and to improve one’s knowledge of foreign languages. Graduate students and researchers from various countries, including Ukraine, have the opportunity to receive grants from the EU to continue studying or conducting research in the EU.
